Personal Electric Watercraft

The core objective of my project was to design an electric
Personal Watercraft (PWC) that would increase the
number of younger consumers entering the PWC market,
whilst also counteracting the negative connotations of air
and noise pollution associated with the PWC sector.
When the first stand up jet ski was introduced in 1974, it
was a small comparatively low-powered concept that
attracted many buyers. Subsequent years and an
on-going race to develop higher performance machines,
has led to a market place dominated by high BHP
expensive products and has left a gap in the market for
entry level products.

The concept has challenged these current trends,
addressing 3 main issues: high initial investment,
transport limitations and soaring fuelling costs.
The craft would retail in the region of £3,500.
Together with high volume manufacturing and the cost of
battery technology declining, this concept could become
a genuine, profitable solution for the future.Luke Leighton

The Everywhere Jacket

George Mallory disappeared 300 metres from the top of mount Everest in 1924. After Mallory’s body was discovered, Mountain Heritage Trust and their team replicated and tested his clothing. They found, against speculation, that his clothing was more than adequate to get him to the top of Everest, and in fact proved to be of a high level of performance, even for today’s standards.

The new Everywhere Jacket is inspired by Mallory’s original ‘Everywhere Jacket’, and exemplifies the appreciation of traditional, early 20th century outdoor apparel.
I felt today’s outdoor apparel misses the style, and tactile quality of traditional natural fabrics and materials.
The Jacket aimed to prove that those forgotten materials in the outdoor world, were not only supremely advanced in their time, but that when combined with modern innovation they could work together to create a completely functionable outdoor garment, with the advantage of looking smart, stylish and above all versatile. Comma

There are several problems with existing urinals, users stand too far back and as a result urine is sprayed onto the wall and floor. This can cause hygiene and odour problems. In addition, there is sometimes insufficient space for larger men, as well as the fear of being overlooked.

A toilet system has been developed with new innovations geared towards people’s requirements. People are led to use the urinal hygienically through interactive design which incorporates a new material (Waterproof Spandex). The Comma urinal is located behind a Spandex wall and moves towards the user when they approach it.

The urinal will not open unless the user is in a specific position. This interactive design makes people stand at an accurate distance from the urinal. The bad smell from the urinal is blocked by the waterproof Spandex wall and cleaning costs are reduced by approximately 20% per year. These merits are realised by the application of new material (Waterproof Spandex) within the design.Joshua Kim

Infrastructure Man:

“Goodbye Disney Land, so long Mickey Mouse. Tomorrow belongs to BRIC Island and Infrastructure Man.”
This project considers how Brazil, Russia, India and China or BRIC, might utilise the techniques mastered by their predecessors in order to soften their Neo-colonialist missions.

The BRIC economies are in the process of surpassing the West. Among them, it is China who is working fastest to fuel its industries. The response from the West is fear that these autocratic regimes will soon come to dictate the way we live our lives. China is well aware of this fear and has responded with a Charm Offensive.

From BRIC Island, Infrastructure Man is a child’s entertainment brand consisting of Emilo, a Brazilian engineer-come-superhero. Emilo has the potential to create vast networks of subterranean tubes that could carry valuable resources like clean water to those who need it most. Toby Melville-Brown

Al Budoor Compressors UAE Air Spectre

The aim of the project was to produce a viable proposal that could showcase the possibilities of using air power in a utility vehicle. Using air has opened new applications for utility vehicles, such as the Oil and Gas industry, Manufacturing and distribution centres.

The Al Budoor Air Spectre is an extended range air powered Utility vehicle. The vehicle carries a Bauer diesel compressor, which can be mounted on the back of the pickup bed or trailered behind when load space is necessary. It would be one of the largest utility vehicles ever produced as it capable of doing the work of larger vehicles such as pickup trucks, lift systems and site transport. This is possible thanks to Engineair Pty Ltd, producers of a new type of air motor that is the most efficient, smallest and powerful in production.Richie Powell

Pulp - Molecular Mixology

“People are drinking differently. Instead of going out to get away from it all, they are staying in to escape. But this is not just to save money, rather to use their homes as a stage for magical events.”
Martin Raymond, co-founder, the Future Laboratory.

Pulp is a set of carefully selected fresh ingredients, pre-measured and encapsulated using a molecular mixology method called spherification. It is designed to be enjoyed in the home, at dinner parties, and nights in, with a group of six friends aged between 25-34.

The package comes with six suggested, easy to follow recipes. However, Pulp encourages creativity by allowing consumers to mix and match their own choice of ingredients using the flavour wheel. Conveniently sold in Supermarkets next to chilled fruit juices, it is all the fun of making a cocktail, without all the mess and expensive, hard to find ingredients!Richard Watters

Vehicle for a Changing Landscape

The aim of the project was to identify what current problems exist with healthcare provision in India. One of the largest areas of concern is the rise of disease, particularly Malaria.
The main direction for the project was to create a vehicle that could reach further into the remote areas of India, to help provide a service to the people who need it most, whilst being cost effective and multifunctional. Interchangeable compartments allow for multifunctionality without over crowding compartments. The Tata LSV chassis was selected due to its off-road capability and low cost. The vehicle provides and ideal platform to deliver insecticide treated nets and spraying equipment, by using modular cargo loads and being transported by train to extend the range of operation..Nathan Lee

Bloom

Bloom is an energy target setter and monitor projected for 2020 that allows a user to become more in control of their energy consumption through an interactive and visually engaging experience.

The design is intended to be unobtrusive, allowing it to be displayed on a windowsill, rather than being tucked
away in a cupboard.

Bloom uis intended for use within the realms of a kitchen or living space. From analysis of existing products in those areas, a mixture of materials and technologies have been carefully considered to achieve the right balance of aesthetics and functionality. Bloom can be used in conjunction with a PC, smartphone or tablet application that provides detailed information and remote target setting.Nathan Walpole

Workshop Enhancement

This project explores how the workshop experience for customers and staff at ‘Desmond J Smail Aston Martin Restorations’ can be enhanced through a tailored restoration service supported with bespoke facilities.

Working closely with staff throughout the project, I proposed facilities that support the current restoration systems in place, whilst encouraging interaction and involvement between the customer, staff and car, and enhancing the personalised service that customers receive.

The restoration service is implemented and overseen by staff - below the line - and defined and personalised by the customer - above the line. While the restoration facilities and system are similar for each customer, the level of customer interaction and the facility use is adapted to suit the personalised service each customer receives. The service diagram (above) shows how the facilities could support a maximum level of customer interaction throughout the process.Eleanor Parry

VITA Day Pack

The VITA daypack is a bag designed as a reaction against the throw away culture of children’s products and is inspired by the current state of our economy and the need for austerity. The bag aims to have a prolonged life of use by the owner through different stages in their lives, from childhood into adulthood, by being simple and functional but more importantly personable and constantly engaging.

The bag is designed for an initial purchase age of 9-11 years, after which the user can then purchase various add-on covers aimed at a wide variety of ages and demographics.

The VITA daypack is versatile and works functionally and aesthetically as both a backpack and a shoulder bag. The styling and use of materials have been carefully considered for mass appeal and a prolonged life.

It is designed to meet the needs of the user through different stages of their lives and its aim is to maintain its appeal.Sophie Farrier
